Just a quick one.

We had some notifiable work down by an EIC registered sparky in June. Are we supposed to get some sort of certificate for the work (i.e. Corgi style) or is the reciept proof enough?

Think you are a little bit confused... the EIC (electrical Installation Certificate) *is* your certificate, if the work didn't involve any new circuits a NWC (minor works certificate) could have been issued

An electrician is registered to self certify electrical work as required by the recent 'Part P' of the building regulations, but when they do so, they are also certifying that the work complies with *all* building regulations (parts B and L among others are relevant here)

The following bodies run 'full scope' schemes for the above: Niceic, Napit, Elecsa, BSI and ECA (BRE), the rules of these schemes require compliance with BS7671, which requires certificates as in the first paragraph to be issued (of course it would be pretty daft to go against BS7671 on the whole anyway!), the contracter than can tell their scheme about the work, and they will tell the local authority that they don't need to worry about it

Sam - my understanding is that the LABC should issue a completion certficate, once the NIC Registered electrician has notified the job. That's certainly what has happened with me in the past.
I don't know if different councils work differently?

Dave, old fella, you're doing it again.

If you are registered with a competent persons scheme then it's the scheme operator who is notified and who issue the Building Regulations Compliance Certificate. They then inform LABC who simply record the details.

Brum next week... all week.

Uncle Ding - this has resulted in a completion cert with "Electrical Work carried out by Uncle Ding Ltd, Sparkies By Appointment" written upon it.
I feel a beer and curry-fueled discussion at The Royal Bengal coming on !

I'll drop you a text later this week...

If I wasn't confused at the start I am now.

I should have said the work was done by a NIC registered sparky. The work involved spliting the incoming supply (henley block??) adding a consumer unit, putting a supply in a shed at the end of the garden and so was, in understand, notifiable.

As I am a bear of very limited brains can someone tell me.........do I get a certificate? who does it come from? how long does it take? who do I chase up first?

Sam,

Assuming you mean a NICEIC registered domestic installer, or a registered contractor, then you should have received a NICEIC certificate which is purple or red depending, and has a traceable serial number. you should have received this at the end of the job, directly from the sparky, or from the company he works for.

But more generally whoever did the work should complete a full Electrical Installation Certificate compliant to BS7671. If you don't have one then the sparky or his company is the first port of call.

It is certainly notifiable, but that would be done by the NICEIC, who should send you a certificate to show that has happened. That may take a little while but I'm not sure how long is normal.

If you don't get any joy with the sparky then you could contact the NICEIC directly via their website www.niceic.org.uk

Hope that Helps

Gavin
