It's just typical of that era. Many many cables, all terminated in difficult-to-access junction boxes rather than loop-in. Some terminals have 6 conductors in. The terms can't cope: the grub screws go cross-threaded.
Also, the (already very shallow) joists have very deep notches cut out of them, with no protection for the cables from penetration.
I thought loop in ceiling roses have been common for years, I never realised they are fairly recent. At least our 14th edition install has loop in roses.
Exactly what I found yesterday whilst preparing for the new boiler to go in. Upstairs,downstairs, outside light and 1 extra in 1 JB with the earths dangling outside the JB.
All tidied up now with new JB's and separate circuits for up and down
