No earth wires in lighting circuit. (edited)

The conduit only goes to the ceiling then stops and the wires come out the top then run under floor boards

I really hope that you have an earth conection at your socket outlets. You need this looking at.

Single insulated conductors must be run in conduit. You need this looking at.

(has now been corrected to lighting - note from mod)

Its not singles its the usual grey covered single core. It suggests it was probably council rewired sometime in the 1960's to the then current regulations, when lighting circuits didn't require earthing. The OP would be well advised not to install any metal faced switches where there is no earth and to consider rewiring at least the lighting circuits. Rewiring might be possible via those conduits, without need to disturb the plastering or decorations.

Would I save much money running new cables myself labeling them and leaving tails at consumer unit to be wired in by an electrician? Thanks

No. Find an electrician and ask him what you may be able to do, under his guidance. There’s a lot to consider here.

I don’t see why you can’t purchase some green/yellow wire and run that in and connect it up yourself.

Given the age and doubtful condition of the existing wiring, you should have an electrician carry out an EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report).
You’ll then know if it’s just adding earth cables, or if there are other underlying issues.

Some of that single stuff also had an earth wire, have you checked its not cut off where the grey is stripped, even if there was you would still need to locate the other ends.
