Photos always help. Are you connecting the 2nd cable via the meter or directly to the 1st cable? Have you tried a simple continuity test using a multimeter on all the cables? Ie when the cable isn't shorted there is no continuity and when it is there it? Same when the cables are joined together etc..

Hi, thanks for the help, back at work so not been able to do anything this week.
I got to the point where I think that there must be a problem with the cable. I have connected up a second run ot the one of the bedrooms and that works fine, but the cable down to the lounge just drops the signal.
I think I am going to run a new cable from loft to lounge.
