Please can anybody help. Recently turn the water off by the main stop cock in the house, to change something in the bathroom. Since then sometimes our cold mains water does not work, but then after a few minutes it spirts into life. But today it has stopped, I have also checked the cold tank in the loft, and that is empty, and the hot has stopped working. Has anybody got any suggestions. as the water board says it is not their problem.

Are you getting cold out the of one of the taps usually the kitchen if not then there is something up with the stop cock and it needs changing.

If you are getting water out of one then you may have a bit of carp in ball valve to tank or new valve req

As above - its probably the washer 'jumper' that is stuck down in the main stopcock. The water ideally needs to be turned off at the main supply out on the street somewhere, and then the main stopcock can be dismantled. You can get away with just replacing the internals if access is a problem. The water board should be able to trace the route of the pipe to the street - and this could be free of charge. If the street stop tap can't be found then its possible to freeze the supply when repairs can be carried out - but I'd get professional advice on this one.

Hi many thanks for your advise, but the problem has now been solved. I t was the main stop cock in the road, ours kept on sticking. Water board came out unstuck it, then changed the valuve a few days later.
