I was out walking with my mum a couple of weeks back, just around where she lives. We were walking past a substation (not tiny, not huge) and the hum/noise coming from it was pretty loud. Within a stones throw (literally) there were houses and apartments, some of which had their windows open given the weather. I reckoned they must have heard the noise, the kind that goes right through you and could become quite annoying, even upsetting.

I know these stations can emit noise, however this seemed excessive.

Mum lives a bit further away, however she mentioned even she thinks she maybe hears it sometimes e.g. early morning before lots of other noises start.

Just thought I'd share that with you :)

She should report it to the DNO / grid. If they don't fix it, you can get the council involved.

You might want to buy an EM scanner - they cost less than having an EM survey. I have a small one just beyond my garden, it never makes a sound and produces less EM than the wifi.

To be honest, mum's far enough away for it not to be heard typically.

Although for the folk beside it, jeez it had to be heard to be believed. It would drive me nuts!

Once was looking at buying a house and went to view and drove right past when I saw that a substation was next to it.

I would think a 24/7 hum would be unpleasant

I saw this video recently, it’s a small town where a bitcoin mining company has set up and expanded.

Must be similar to unfortunates who suddenly find one of Red Ed's windmills planted near their houses. Brother stays at a friends villa in Portugal that has overhead power cables quite close. They can be quite noisy too.
