I know the standard reply is to use specialist melamine primer, but if the surface is suitably roughened, can normal wood or "multi surface" primer be used instead?

I see that multi surface primers mention various non-porous materials they can be used on but don't tend to mention melamine specifically.

You probably know that melamine faced chipboard and thermofoil can be a be nightmare.

The melamine specific primers increase the wearing resistance of the finish, but because underneath it's plastic it won't be anywhere near as hard wearing as other stuff once your done.

A general purpose acrylic undercoat primer will work, with the above info in mind and you need to be gentle. Johnstone's speciality any surface primer is the only one I know made explicitly for melamine from the get go.

Zinsser BIN many use. There are waterbased adhesion primes that will work with scotch pad and clean first...
