Hi all. I am doing a self build extension and currently running the hot and cold pipes (15mm hep2o pipes) in my extension (bathroom). I decided I am going to notch as I have space above the 100mm pir insulation. I have got double clips but noticed they require me having to notch twice as deep as they are bulky clips (around 30mm) and I only have 6x2 joists, so I believe the maximum is about 19mm is there smaller clips out there I can use? Or would it be ok to get away with notching that deep?

A 6x2 is about 145mm deep after finishing, so max notch depth of 0.125×145=18mm, and only permitted between 7-25% of the total span.

So no, you can't notch any deeper than 18mm. Don't forget, too, that plastic pipe fittings are bulky so you'll need to bend the pipe downwards to get a fitting in, and won't be able to have fittings close to joists. Much better all in all to channel the PIR out and drill the joists, then fill back in afterwards.

If you really must notch, Talon make joist clips which will help you

When pipes running vertically should hot pipe be on left hand side or right hand side or doesn’t it matter?

Depends, if it running up to a shower then hot would be left, if it's just say running upstairs then it there isn't really standard. Just mark red and/or blue to keep track of which is which.

Thanks madrab it’s coming down from the loft into a bathroom extension.

Sorry last question on this. This look all good notched out. Horse hair felt then saddle clips and then a safe plate above it
