I had the same thing with an XR2i. Exhaust blowing, took it to (I know I know should have known better!) Kwik Fit and they diagnosed the entire exhaust system needed replaced.
I declined the repair and took it to another garage. They diagnosed just one section was faulty, the rest was fine. Saved a fair whack! Good service.

Kwik Fitup use several tactics. Years ago needed a full exhaust for my Carlton and for some inexplicable reason I phoned them for a price. Tried to bull me by saying there's more than one type of exhaust for the car. Said they wanted it up on the ramp to see which one I needed. I said it's a 2000cc manual saloon and there's only one possible pattern of exhaust that will fit ( I knew this to be true), but still wouldn't quote without it being on a ramp when other exhaust companies could give a price over the phone. Only reason I could think was once on the ramp, customers would be more likely to have their exorbitantly priced exhaust because they were already there and the car was ready to be worked on.
