I’ve had this extractor fan in my bathroom for 12 years and it’s never been cleaned due to fear of electrocution. Anyway I’ve bought some new filters and removed the cover facing. My question is, can I safely wash inside the fan with hot soapy water providing the fan is turned off at the mains? Also, if anyone can provide an answer to the purpose of the pull cord as it does not turn the fan off.

Start with a vacuum cleaner then a damp cloth if you need to. Using soapy water would probably take too long to dry out. The switch might work once you have all that gunge out.
