Oil or water based

Morning all.

Our house is from the late 60's, as is the paintwork.

I've been told that the existing paint on the skirting boards is likely to be oil based and that when I come to gloss them, I'll need to repaint with an oil based gloss as a water based wont adhere too well.

What are people's thoughts? Has anyone else recently painted old woodwork with a water based gloss?

Sand it, oil undercoat, wait a few days, light sand then do what you like. It adheres very well.
