what should I do to my back boiler behind my coal fire now my cylinder is being removed to have a combi boiler fitted. Do I need to remove it or just drain it down and leave it empty. I still intend to use the coal fire.

Why not have a split HW system. Backboiler for cylinder and combi water in the kitchen

DON'T REMOVE YOUR CYLINDER!!!!!!!

Combis are ok for one or two people, but take a longer term view. What if more people live in the house? I have customers with combi boilers who want me to quote for fitting a cylinder (which was removed when the combi was fitted). You can run a cylinder as a seperate zone on the CH circuit. That gives you the stored hw for baths, and with an immersion heater, an alternative when the boiler breaks down.

As DP suggests think about using the fire as well. If it is disconnected, ensure the pipes to the back boiler are not sealed.
