I actually enjoyed sitting in pubs by candle light, only beer was drawn from a barrel on a stillage behind the bar like it should be, only bottled beer was Newky brown if I remember, and pub grub was a cheese ansd onion roll, your onion breth counteracted the romantic feel of a candle lit drink.
