Ideally the fusebox should be relaced, or at least if possible the asbestos fuseholders changed, but that will require an asbestos certified removal company. Thanks Bazza, I read those links earlier.

It was an isolator L3 down I replaced the wire, then wished I hadn't, it was feeding a small office and they couldn't shut the shutters.....bloody job, wish I'd listened in school lol.Ideally the fusebox should be relaced, or at least if possible the asbestos fuseholders changed, but that will require an asbestos certified removal company.
Be careful buddy, it aint nice stuff.
P3 mask I hope.It was an isolator L3 down I replaced the wire, then wished I hadn't, it was feeding a small office and they couldn't shut the shutters.....bloody job, wish I'd listened in school lol.

I agree it isn't, do you think you've ever come into contact with asbestos years ago?We won't / not allowed to pull the ceramic pot fuses anymore. leave them intact and we replace the cutout or isolator as a whole. Only takes a few particles to get into your lungs to cause you problems. The job aint worth the risk.
You don't.What's your views on changing a fuse wire in an old asbestos lined fuse?
If it's a commercial property, you ask for their asbestos register and see what's recorded in it.What would you lot do?

Absolutely, up until recently I have had to deal with the stuff. We dress up in the most ridiculous PPE when dealing with the stuff but tbh it is understandable now we know what we know. Years ago I was pulling those fuses all day long without any knowledge of the dangers.I agree it isn't, do you think you've ever come into contact with asbestos years ago?

It has crossed my mind but it takes about 10 years for you to find out, I think now I am past the worrying from previous times. I think at some stage we have all come into contact with it ,probably without even knowing. I worked on old steam boilers in one job where all of the lagging as well as seals where all blue asbestos. It is a worry but with H&S now it would be better to work in what we used to do without thinking. If you come accross pot ceramic fuse holders, just dont touch them without being kitted out with the correct PPE and clean air full face respirators.Does that worry you? When I think back it scares me to death![]()

Most of us will have worked on this type of equipment and never knew the dangers. When you see it now, it's hard to believe a small piece of cloth like that has the potential to cause so much illness![]()
I did for many years Martin, but of course as the material ages it gets more crumbly and poses bigger dangers than it did when fairly new. When we moved into our current home there was asbestos flex feeding the immersion heater, installed in 1973. The first thing I did was wrap it in insulation tape. Most of us will have worked on this type of equipment and never knew the dangers.
