Hi I want to put a outside lantern outside my front door, can I do this on a normal plug and just switch on when needed? Problem being the lantern I bought only has room for two wires and a plug obviously is 2 core??

Yes, but flex running through a wall to a plug in a socket is a tacky bodge.
That's not a problem - you just need to make the earth core safe e.g. choc-block inside the light (don't cut it back in case it's needed in the future).
