I have an outside light serving the back patio area, controlled by a switch inside the kitchen. Very basic light, just switches on and off - no motion sensor.

It stopped working a while ago. I tried changing the bulb - no joy. Before I go to the expense and effort of buying and fitting a new light, I thought it worth finding out if the electricity supply to it is OK (we've had squirrels in the loft before so it's possible that a cable could have been chewed).

So my question is: Is there a way to determine from the wiring at the light switch (live, neutral and earth) whether or not the current is flowing through OK? I have a multimeter.

Thanks.

No. You will need to measure at the lamp fitting to make sure electricity is getting to the lamp fitting. If you measure at the switch and find voltage, then it doesnt mean the cable is ok to the lamp fitting. There will be no current flowing if the lamp is not working.

Check that the blown bulb didn't pull a MCB (fuse) down in the consumer unit box beside the meter? Some of those halogen tubes are difficult to fit, as they sit beside the connection and will not light? Especially if you are up a ladder

Good luck
