Outside Mains Supply Electrical replacement !!

It always makes me laugh when people look at the rules, procedures, and charges of utility companies, and think "I'm not paying the latter so I'll disregard the former and plough ahead with my own way of doing things so that when the time comes I'll get what I want my way because I'll have done something that they'll be bound to be happy with".

Predictions like "I am only going to expose a gas leak.. they will arrive and make it safe.. " are also amusing.

What are you going to do, when the time(s) come, if the utility say "It's £5,000, plus the removal of the driveway at your expense, plus the reinstatement of the driveway at your expense, or you'll have to learn to live with no electricity/water/gas. Take it or leave it."?

london boy
when have you seen new drivways laid... and at the same time when have you seen certain utiltys replaced?
you may have never seen a water pipe burst..or a elecy cable go bang, but u do not live at my house, you have no idea of the soil type under the planned driveway and more to the point you have no idea of the condition of the pipes and so on. please read my OP and understand my logic in wanting to do it the best way, whilst saving money, but also trying to avoid any major cost/work/heartache and all that.
so whilst i am digging up the area i am planning ahead.
it is all rather simple dude

hello Mr Ban all Sheds
no it is all to do with not wanting to pay for stupid high fees, for somthing that should be at the suppliers expense.. as if i had no gas pipe, i would instal a tank.. and they can go whistle at the costly replacement cost for a new pipe.. but hey.. this is the UK and if you want to pay for silly costs.. and not do it on the cheap..then be my guest.
I am simply trying to save a bob or 2 of ones hard earnd cash. guys like you like to laugh.. so Bud, I got an idea
you give me the cash, and i will gladly pay the gas and elecy and the water co to do it all on the high costing as you will be very Very happy to pay for it.
i will private message you my paypal account details and you can blip me over the cash ok bud
or..
you can understand my point! to my OP.

You say you are going to uncover a gas leak and get the gas people to cap it off and make it safe.

[1] Is this an existing leak, in which case they may say why didn't you report it earlier.

[2] you make the leak, by accident of course, in which case they may charge you for the emergency call out. ( building work damage is normally charged to the person who did the damage and the builder's insurance pays if it was a genuine accident ). Then they come out to install a new pipe and charge you for that.

It isn't worth trying to pull a fast one by "accidental" leaks

I found the below relating to Mr Ban All Sheds

I believe that BAS
has a genuine desire to reduce the dangers of un-informed DIY work but this desire is expressed too strongly and thus biases the words he uses towards being expressions of agressive prohibition instead of words encouraging education.

To BAS
No one can ever stop the ignorant or arrogantly deviant DIY person from ignoring the law, regulations and authority that form part of DIY when done properly. Offer advice and politely spell out the dangers, suggest better methods and alternative options and some deviant DIY people may be inclined to listen to your advice and as a result of your help do it properly. The more one rants at the arrogantly deviant person the more that person is likely to remain deviant.

When will you ever simply give plain simple decent and correct advice, without your quips and rants and digs at me and others like me.
you are a silly man
and i wish you would simply advise us and that is it. this is an advice forum.. not a stab and a dig and a rant at it's users and guys and girls that have little or no idea.. hence the reason why we come on here.
so please simply do not reply to me nor my postings, unless you have got something valid and polite and useful to give.

we bud have been here before and it think it is sad and poor that you have nothing better to do with your life than to be the man you really are...
as you time and time again prove to everyone on here.

Hey there.
listen.. I am only going by what a gas engineer has advised me to do, so as it will save me some cash then why not try this.

I am scottish, just to help you understand me ok lol
i have the money, but i would rather save it, or spend it on beer than some CEO's pocket

i have been told that as this is very old gas pipe, that they are due for renewal in the future.. and if i call up with a leak.. they will rip it up/replace it for free as they will see it was due for renewal anyways.. as it will be reparing an old pipe, to make good? this they will not do
i may just make the date move forward a little. as in a few years
in some ways I am making it simpler, as i am doing the hard graft, never afraid to get me hands dirty, just like mr BAS lol

Contact the relevant utilities and ask them how deep to bury your ductwork, if they require any particular colour coding, etc etc. Take pictures of your work. That way, you shouldn't have any problems later down the line when they can't look under your driveway to ascertain if the ducting is buried 60 or 600mm deep.

Hey there Dude
woohoo someone with some correct and polite and also useful advice
I shall do this, as i had planned to do this but i like the idea of colour coding the pull cords, mind you I will only need one.
and yes i am aware of the regs for depth and back filling in and so on.
oh man it is good to hear some on here to like to help.

Many thanks

I could use PayPal to send you 10p so that you can phone someone who gives a s**t what an idiot like you thinks.

How times have changed.

When I was a young lad and still courting, we used to chat up girls with "here's 10p. Ring your mum and tell her you're not coming home tonight"

You're never gonna pull with your line BAS.

I'm pretty sure I'd not want to pull someone who doesn't think that deliberately creating a gas leak in order to create an emergency so that he won't have pay for something is an idiotic thing to do...

Is this "gas engineer" a friend of yours ? Because with friends like that you don't need enemies.

Are you sure he is not trying to set you up for a big expensive pay out ? Have you done something to upset him ?

Has he told you how to create leak and make it look like it happened naturally. Gas inspectors are not idiots and can spot intentional damage to pipe work. I believe there have been criminal prosecutions following intentional damage to gas installations.

Perhaps that gas engineer really doesn't like you.

How youthful you are, Rob.

When I were a lad, it was,

"here's 2p. Ring your mum and tell her you're not coming home tonight"
