Hi,
1st time on the site & I'm hopeless at DIY but trying to get better. I got an outside tap kit which was fine until the tap on the inside packed in. So I got another kit & took off the old self cutting valve & put on the new one over the hole. The new tap is directly over the hole in the pipe & there are no blockages but when I turn on the tap I only get water for about 5 seconds & then nothing, any one got any ideas what I need to do to get it working ?

assuming u have water in the cut pipe...
turn water off..take new kit off and blow down it..
if u cant ...check why
if u can and all u are doing is connecting it to the pipe then it should work or u have no water in the cut" pipe

Those kits are *****.

You do not get much pressure / flow out of those self cutting valves and you would be better served plumbing it properly with compression fittings. ;)

I don't get much water out of the valve itself, so am I best cutting the pipe & using the compresion joint type?

Thanks, I'll give that a try - So I get one of those washing machine 15mm valve tee type things, cut the pipe, stick the valve in & hopefully don't flood the kitchen?

Better to use a compression T and a normal stopcock. You should put a double check valve in the pipe before it goes outside the building too. This is to prevent backflow. It is not now acceptable to fit a tap with built in non-return valve.
