Having the bathroom re-done. Want to install provision for hair dryer and, of all things, 'curling tongs' !! Go figure - they are not for me. I wish I had enough hair.

Not enough space to allow installation of a socket as don't have the 3m distance from zone 1. But do have room outside of zone 2.

Can I install a 30ma rcd spur for each and have them wired in direct to these - cable being trimmed to ensure they cannot be used in z2?

They would be no where near the wash basin. A toilet is near but the cable, being trimmed, would still ensure that if dropped they could not fall in.

Regs extracts I have found on the internet seems to mention things like washing machines etc. But not about the practical stuff you would want in a bathroom.

Cheers for any advice you can give.

Gareth

I would say no!

701.512.3 ERECTION OF SWITCHGEAR, CONTROLGEAR AND ACCESSORIES
(i) Zone 0 - no switchgear or accessories are permitted
(ii) Zone 1 - only switches/sockets for SELV circuits and equipment - max 12V a.c. rms or 30V ripplefree
d.c. may be used. Safety source to be outside zones 0, 1 & 2.
(iii) Zone 2 only switches/sockets for SELV circuits and equipment - max 25V a.c. rms or 60V ripplefree dc. Safety source to be outside zones 0, 1 & 2, shaver sockets to BS EN 61558-2-5 may be fitted.

Thanks for getting back to me on this.

So the information you gave is for zones 0 through 2.

This is outside of zone 2 though - so is there any specific detail on that in the regs?

Cheers

A list of equipment that is allowed outside the zones but in the bathroom/shower room.
are
LV lights (Tranformers outside Z1&2)
Mains Lights
Pull Switch
Light Switch
Batten Holder
Whirlpool Units
Tower Rail
Mains Fan
Shaver Socket
Water Heater
Electric Shower
Shower Pump
SELV Equipment (Transformers outside Z1&2)
Socket Outlet (3.0m from Z1, 30mA RCD)
Laundry Equipment (permanently connected, 30mA RCD)

Is your bathroom big enough to have a socket 3m horizontally away from the boundry of zone 1?

 lol :D

Unlike the other posters, I've read the question.

Is it possible to mount a RCD somewhere outside the bathroom, but use the feed from this to supply a cable outlet plate to permanently connect the tongs?

The OSG suggests that that only general rules apply outside zones.
The BRB does not specify or exclude any current using equipment beyond zone 1
