Over door canopy advice

Hi. I am new to this forum and don't have too many DIY skills so am seeking some advice please.

How would you say is the easiest/best way to restore our this. I was thinking some upvc boards would be best and just nail them over but there are two big bolts on either side. The other way I suppose is to strip and repaint but that is probably going to create a huge mess.

Any tips/advice would be really appreciated.

Under the many layers of paint its aluminium I think.
