Hi

I need to paint one of those dark mahogony (effect?) bath panels white. I was going to key the surface by lightly sanding it before painting. Then give a few costs of oil based white undercoat before giving it a top coat of oil based white gloss (or perhaps a satin finish)

Does this approach seem acceptable?

Your more or less on the right track....but use a primer after you have sanded the panel.

Id go for a melamine primer or Dulux supergrip....paint doesnt take well to stained/varnished wood, the primer will give you more chance of success.

When sanding dont forget to always sand in the direction that youl be painting in, which in most cases is the direction of the grain.
