hi could anyone tell me if you have to be register to become portable applience tester? or can i buy the gear and go!!! if need be do a course at collage

I have just bought a PAT tester for my business.

I will be going on a course as I have only done a little of this before.

Gives you a cert to show folk if nothing else !!!

No need to register anywhere, but a course is most advisable. As is good kit, insurance, and an ability to put up with unrivalled amounts of boredom.
Also, pat is easy if you know some basics about electrics, but it is not something a beginner can just jump into. There is more to it than first appearances suggest.
Hope this helps, TS.

IEE code of practice for in service testing is a good read, I have heard the course is a bit naff and overpriced

Guess it depends where you do it, but when I did the course it was a very informative 2 days (Unicorn Center, Portsmouth.) And it beats being at work. I might of been a bit jaded though, cause I did it at the same place as 1st year of my apprenticeship, so it was a trip down memory lane for me.
And yes, the code of practice is an absolute must, especially if the course is gonna be skipped.

With respect, if you have to ask if you need to go on a course to do somewthing you know nothing about, then perhaps you shouldn't do the job in the first place.

Do you actually understand just how dangerous PAT testing can be?

Oh by the way..you never go to collage to learn something...you go to college!!

With all due respect to Big_Spark, how can you have a pop at someone 4 spelling when you use words like "somewthing"?
With all due respect to the poster, big_spark actually said what I was trying to, but couldn't find the words for. It seems as though you are trying to gain access to a field you are inexperienced in. Trying to learn is very admirable, but please look into it in more depth. Don't mean to sound rude or patronising mate. Just trying to help. Its like me, I have been wiring S**t for nearly 20 years, but every day learn something new. Thats why i'm only a TraineeSpark.
hope this helps TS.

thank you guys (not big spark) im going on course in two week thanks to the GOOD response!!!! and i cant wait to get into it, owe and big spark go !@#$ ya self!

Hoisted by ones' own petard

When you do come to buy a PAT tester, I would recommend something like the Megger PAT 4 DV or DVF (F = flash test.) I also believe the Seaward testers to be quite good. I wouldn't go for any tester now which isn't automated and doesn't store the test results, especially if you are planning on doing a lot of testing. I found the older testers a bit of a pain in a modern day environment as you need to manually record the test results. Another advantage of the automated tester is it allows the correct sequence of tests for items such as computers once you have told it you are testing I.T. items which with a manual tester it could be quite easy do a 20A bond test.
