What is the best way to paint an artexed ceiling, roller or brush?. Is vinyl silk better than matt in appearance?. Any ideas gratefully received :p By the way each of my rooms has an artexed ceilling and all are different, some have a fan design some the 'broken leather look' etc.

I have exactly the same ceilings with various patterns too. I found it depends on the actual individual pattern, a brush was better for the deeper and stippled patterns whereas a (deep pile) roller was ok for the ones done with newspaper or a leather. I'm sorry I can't be more helpful but it will be suck it and see I'm afraid. I ended up using a combination of the two and you need a brush round the edges anyway, emulsion is only water based and easy to clean off.

I like the matt finish as you don't seem to get the shadows of light you get with silk, but that depends what you prefer yourself.

If there are any visible small cracks in the Artex, polycell make a flexible paint to cover them.

I would recommend a pair of safety specs though as some emulsions hurt when they go in your eyes.

rough surface roller, quicker and easier. matt tends not to show up the surface so much if your trying to tone it down

Thanks very much for your advice. I do have some small cracks in some of the artex so I'll cover these first. I thought perhaps that I would use vinyl silk for the fan designs to reflect the light and matt for the others (variety is the spice of life after all!). ;)
