Ok,

No expert here but trying to sell my house and the dormer roof made of cedar wood cladding looks very 70's now and it has put buyers off (apparently)

Wood is in very good condition so can I paint over this? Is there any prep work required.

Any tips or advice appreciated

Lots of prep if your painting. Have you considered recladding in UPVC ?
Might look better than painting old cladding and more presentable for selling

Ceder will bleed thro paints so you wil neeed to block it with something like zinsser 123 one or two coats, fill all holes Then a couple of coats of sadolin Superdec. I would steer away from white finish.

There are more products maybe somone else knows better?

Good luck...

I have debated upvc. Just want it sorted out as house is on the market and the cedar is 'putting people off' according to the estate agent!

:(

If its only being done to sell, i wouldnt worry about the long term. Cedar is the wood with the most natural oil in it, hence why they use it for roof shingles. It does need sealing as jondecs says, why not try a few coats of Dulux all seasons masonry paint, this is oil based (pliolite) and has a sheen to it. This will withstand the elements and not look too bad. Rain proof in 15 mins aswell. ;)
