So I've re-run some sockets and patched the areas with bonding as a sub-base and plaster on top. I was surprised at the finish I was able to achieve with this, I've got to say it sands better than any filler I have used, so I will be doing this again.

My question is do I need to apply anything to these areas before painting the walls in emulsion?

I thought that was too neat for a sparks job;) Just use some diluted emulsion that you're going to use on the walls as a mist coat
