What's the best way to paint skirting edges, door frames edges etc in a straight line without getting he paint on the wall?

For a nice straight paint line carefully line the edge of the masking tape to the edge of the skirting/architrave before pushing it onto the wall and don't push too hard as the tape will be more likely to take wall paint with it when removed (you can get low-tack tape that's less likely to give this problem).

or finish the walls last 
ceilings , walls 1st coat, finish doors and frames, walls 2nd coat then skirting.A lot easier for the diy'er to cut the walls in than the door frame.
