@foxhole Thanks, but a short extension lead is not something I'm happy doing next to a kettle and pots of water on the stove. A kitchen worktop is not a safe place for extension leads IMHO. Too many people and too much potential for carelessness and water spillage. It's the potential for water getting into the electrics via the damaged cable which is driving me to resolve this by means slightly more sophisticated than a piece of electric tape. So I think I will explore the waterproof cable joiners suggested above.

Your concerns are completely unwarranted imo.
Unless you intend to run the kettle and boil a pot of water overnight unattended .

No assumption, as you stated “ I usually make bread overnight ”.
If you make during the day , even safer .

I quite often do make overnight (not every night) hence concern about damaged cable as obviously not guaranteed that someone will be around if things go awry - smoking, sparking, shorting. In that regard doing nothing was never an option. So for now I have stopped overnight baking, particularly as I have teenagers who quite often cook things like pasta on the stovetop after I have gone to bed

But during the holidays I also make bread during the day as I'm not working, so concerns about water damage are equally valid. But I am happy with the waterproof cable connector solution proposed, particularly as I have now managed to locate some of the waterproof connectors at a Screwfix store close to where I will be visiting relatives over the New Year break. They look relatively straightforward to wire up. Not really sure how one pulls the cable through the gel collar. But I'm sure I'll figure it out!
