Presumably the "constant force" is actually quite high, in order to get a good contact? But the fact that it's evenly distributed around the circumference of the lead means it won't cause it to deform.
I was under the impression these spring clips had gone out of fashion on lead cable and they're supplied for use on steel armour, the most recent new earth connexions I've seen on lead have been made off with copper and brass clamps, very reminiscent of the old ones.
