My sister recently received a fine through the post from a stay in supermarket car park. The ticket machine was the type that needed the car registration.
She accidentally left off the first two characters hence the company operating the machines caught her car entering and leaving the car park on camera and the car reg didn't match any ticket paid for that day.
Having researched the matter, it seems companies operating paid parking systems can't impose fines. A solicitor interviewed on the BBC Watchdog program advises ignoring any demand for parking fine payments from these companies received through the post.
