We had a very old carpet covering the parquet flooring and the underlay beneath it had broken up into 'crumbs'. The parquet wood seems to have absorbed the oil or some substance fom the underlay and has darkened. The parquet is 1920's oak. Could anyone suggest how we can restore the original colour of the wood and how can we best preserve it for the future?

Proper sanding (first check for any loose blocks) and apply a natural oil/hardwaxoil as new finish. Maintain on a regular base
