As you know Im thinking of registering in a competent person scheme, but a little worried about the assessment, do they fire questions at you, when looking at existing jobs I have 2 which are in the same property, would be acceptable?

The first job would be wiring the loft extension, and the 2nd job would be wiring out the shed, the supply is from two different consumer units so theoretically its 2 different jobs at one address.

If I were you I'd use two jobs at different addresses, just to make sure that it does not cause you any problems.

I had my assesment about a month or so ago with the NIC and the guy that came out to me was one of the nicest guy's you could meet!

The first job that I use was a full rewire with E7 heating and a gas water heater (empty property). The main things that he wanted me to show was prooving safe isolation in addition to carrying out R1+R2, Ze, PFC and RCD tests. When I did my R1+R2 on a final ring I also prooved end to end continuity and polarity. He wasn't bothered about leaving the board open and exposed as we were the only ones there, although I would advocate putting all covers back on when you are away from them (unless he says otherwise). He also wanted to have a look at the wiring behind several accesories. He didn't ask a thing about safe zones although I did have a bitch to him about my LABC's and some of the things that they have asked me about safe zones in the past.

The second job was a conversion of a bedrom to a bathroom, so was some IP 12v spots, an extractor fan and supp bonding. He did not want me to carry out any tests at this property and only had a quick look around commented about the old wylex std board and then said that he was more than happy about my work.

Passed with flying colours and was much easier than I thought it would be. Just remember that they are normal blokes that want you to do good!

Tony, don't worry about the horror stories, just concentrate on getting up to speed. Think safety and you'll be fine... as long as you do actually know what you're doing.

Questions? It depends. If you bumble along, looking confused your assessor may well need to ask a lot of questions to discover what your actions are not demonstrating, but if you are confident and methodical you'll have an easier ride.

Earthing and bonding are always hot topics, so make sure there are no shortcomings on the jobs you show.

cheers for the advice guys, I'm capable of testing, I tested the whole emergencly lighting we installed at Albert Square (yup eastenders) 167 lights accross about 17 circuits, just need to brush up on a few bits.

I was just thinking guys, Im about to send off the application form to register as part p, but just deciding on what jobs to submit.

For example could I select a job in commercial premises? If my jobs have to be in a domestic then Im a little stuck as I need the part p before I can work in a domestic.

On the other hand are you allowed to submit your application with jobs that are yet to be started, then get assessed on those particular jobs.

Why am I babbling, basically Im trying to get around haveing to pay the building inspector to come and inspect my work, £100 odd pounds I believe. its catch 22, I need to do some work in domestic dwellings to prove Im able to but I cant work in these premises until I register part p, unless I pay the building inspector £100 per job.

Do you see my problem or is the beer running away with me?

Not saying that you should, but I know someone who registered his previous 6 months worth of work after he was registered.

Your assesor is will not be bothered if you haven't notified your LABC about your jobs.

Don't volunteer this info though as you should only use your scheme provider to register jobs that you have done after you have registered
