We have an integral garage, and would like to:

1) Replace garage door with uPVC French Doors
2) Fit a stud wall (with door) in the middle, so the rear area can be storage and the front area can be somewhere to put the dogs

For security, we would fit blinds/curtains and paint the walls/floor so it looks like a room rather than a garage. There wouldn't actually be a door through to the house, though.

Is this something we're allowed to do, or is it a case of "if you can't get a car through the door then it's a habitable space and you must install flooring/insulation/etc."

Have you checked with the planning authority for any restrictions or conditions on the existing planning permission regarding keeping the garage as a garage?

It's not just the use, but the likely use that determines whether you will need to submit a building warrant application
