But, he can. He hates mastics. I had to use hybrid polymer sealant near the corner to stick the uPVC down or it would flap about in strong winds. Also the soffit board surface was filled using the same thing. Now, part of it is water proof! The vents were attached using the same.

They have their place; plenty of brickwork expansion joints full of goo out there.. And my sports water bottle is sealed up by a silicone o-ring in the lid.
 
It just came as part of the bottle. The manufacturer makes great claims about how leakproof their complicated design is, but I don't know if they won any awards for it
