Hi all

My local garage has advised that I need to replace the rear axle bearings on my peugeot 206, however, they have also advised that it would be easier just to replace the entire back axle instead of just the bearings. Is this correct, does anyone know?

Is it impossible to change the bearings on their own or is the garage just trying to make a christmas bonus on me?

TIA

Definitely the way to go is to replace the whole axle / subframe...try a specialist Peugeot breakers ideally for a car thats had a frontal shunt.

i`ve worked at a peugoet dealership before and i`ve replaced just the bearings, if you have it done in the dealership it will cost you a arm and a leg in labour costs, and if they are fitting the whole axle with all new parts it will cost you even more, the only reason i would personally replace the whole lot is if i was getting the parts used from a scrappy, but even then i would tend to just replace the bearings as this would be far more cost effective as there isn`t anything wrong with the axle apart from the bearings, but i could do it all myself, and if you can`t then your in a catch 22, probably a days work for a mechanic to replace bearings on a pug

There is a firm near me at Stockland in Devon that supplies completely reconditioned axles for £350 + vat.

They used to fit them as well if required.
