Its my understanding that Xc leads and Xl lags the voltage however got conflicting notes from college for drawing phasor diagram can any one help in correcting me?
 
in an inductor, the voltage will lead the current by 90 degrees and for a capacitor it will lag the current by 90 degrees.

what were the college notes?
 
Phasors are much safer set to stun.

Yes I must admit I`ve always got to think of the convention used for which leads which and which lags which
 
The notes are the same it was actually the drawing of the diagram wich is conflicting - sorry i cant post pic ill try to explain:
if using i as ref and in phase Vr would Xc come under the line and Xl above - have diagrams showing both but would assume that Xc would be above as it is leading not lagging (if that makes any sense)
 
I always remembered it as civil, C I V I L, capacitance (C) I leads V, inductance (L) I laggs V.
 
yeah i use that method its just the drawing thats got me confused should Xc go under or above the ref line i would say above as it leads but my college notes show it below and im getting all confused over the drawing

Are you talking about the phasor diagram as the Xc phasor will point below the origin and the Xl will above the origin.

On the diagram the phasors will be rotating clockwise relative to time.
 
thats exactly what im talking about theres an anticlockwise arrow on diagram however it appears clockwise when viewed ie:
Xc leads so phasor is before(below the ref) and Xl lags so follows(above the ref)
