I currently use the *55* telephone alarm to wake me.

This got me thinking: is there a way to adapt a cheap clock radio to output to a telephone ringer independent of BT's network?

Not easily. Why bother, when you can use the clock radio to wake you up?

Have you got a "socket and see" type plug-in tester?

I use the light switch, lights turn on when time to get up. Wife uses mobile phone, it plays silly music when time for her to get up, difference is it does not wake her. One morning I did try the bed adjustment switches, she was near bent double before she woke up. Be it noise, movement or light it's down to the person what will wake them. And we adjust ourselves to respond so certain sounds, music often will not wake people, but a bell even when a lot lower volume will.

I assume the "socket and see" tester produces a whine very like a phone, and a simple timer with turn it into an alarm, could even plug in the vacuum cleaner although some safety concerns there. With my kettle switching it off on the wall means it will switch off at kettle so can't really set it up for morning cupa. I looked at electric whistling kettles silly prices. But I still have an original teasmaid.

Mother is still my best alarm clock, when she gets up, then no option I get up.

I need a nice deep noise to wake me. HF's do not work.

I'm interested if it could be done. If it can, I'd like to try!

I do have several SASs, but none of them would do the job. One I cannot even hear!
I suppose I could set the MFT to IR and stick croc clips in strategic places.

Yup. Plug-in timer and you're good to go. A useful feature is that once it goes off it runs and runs until you get up and unplug it.

They take up an awful lot of room in your bag if you are travelling.

A plug in ringer that sounds like a low frequency phone ringing would be great!

There are three aspects:
- generating a clock time output - easiest way of doing this is to use a timer such as Videx V701 or a mains timeswitch
- generating the cadenced ringing output - very difficult, you can get circuits using 555 timer chips to simulate a ringing cadence
- generating the ringing voltage - conventional telephone bells don't ringon 50 Hz, they need 16 - 20 Hz ringing supply.

Therefore to simplify, use a mains or volt free timeswitch and a sounder that doesn't need a ringing cadence

You could use a 12 volt supply and a car horn?

or a mains powered foghorn type buzzer

I use something similar when I need to get up really early!

Or you could have an in-house PABX with a clock alarm facility - on my Panasonic it's 76hhmm01# and it rings the phone bells with a triple alarm cadence.

Loudenlow make low frequency smoke alarms. Could do with one of those rigged up to a timer.

Just get a clockwork alarm clock with the bell and hammer on the top.
