When I did the floor and skirting, I took a phone cable from the back of the master socket (as normal) and ran it round behind the skirting to the other side of the room to keep things tidy (that's where the main sockets/router etc are).

About 6 months ago we had a mystery phone issue that turned out to be one/both of the wires in use in the extension cabling failing.

No problem; I just switched to another pair of wires in the cable.

    Now those have failed.

I can probably find another pair that will work in the same cabling, but for how long?

Can't really see why the cable (new) is failing like this.

    :(

how have you terminated the wires/ Did you use a proper IDC tool?

Have you bent the cable or run it under carpet so the cores get fractured?

Yeah, it's all done properly. It's weird.

The cable isn't under pressure or tension. Very odd.

Just changed the wiring to use yet another pair, and it's all back and running. Problem is that I've now run out of pairs!

What type of cable have you used ?

If it is stranded cable then the IDC joints will fail

    Really ?
My guess is that the cable is trapped somewhere. Over time, slight movements (changes in temperature & humidity, people walking about) damages the cable.

when you say mystery phone issue, do you mean it went open circuit, short circuit, or even earth contact on the faulty pairs?

my money's on simons' guess - the cable willl be trapped at some point.
