Well folks, It's that time again.

These are all from the same property.

Yet another case of bad DIY.

Yep, thats a 1.5mm² fed from the ring circuit.

This was also fed direct from the ring circuit.

This junction box was so damp that mould was growing in it. I had to break the lid off to get into it.
It's IR was down to about 0.10Mohm, and was causing the RCD to trip.

How do you get all these juicy jobs?! I take it the call out was for the RCD?

Tim77, when DIYers go shopping for electrical stuff, lets say they want to add a socket spur. They go out and buy the socket and backbox. Thats it. They get home, and realise they forgot to buy cable. No problem, he's got some leftover from another job in the shed. Oh its only 1.5mm well never mind its only a socket. So he chases the wires in, fits the socket and backbox, wires it up. Oh the earth wire is bare . . .

Now either one of 2 things is thought by mr DIY.
1. Oh the cable is made like that it must be ok.
2. Oh bugger I forgot the blasted earth sleeving. Never mind.

Rob I just noticed, is the neutral switched on that light fitting???

Yes it is a switched neutral, and yes I did notice it, hence 'ALSO' fed from the ring cct.

Rob, I think your pics are great and just go to show what Toss£rs there are out there who think they know what they are doing.

2 yrs ago I bought a house in Shipley, the surveyor never even mentioned the electrics (full report) but after several trip outs on the ring main, and 15 bulbs go in 2 days i thought I had better have a look at what was going on.

The ring main was done entirely in 1.5mm sq T&E not a strip of sleeve to be seen, no cables ran horizontally or vertically, the CU looked like a tin of spagetti, the shower had already started to arc across (frig knows how my daughter is alive!)

Any way my brother (Sparky) and myself (2yrs complete of C&G2330) had to completely re-wire the whole damn place. When we came to remove the OLD CU it just fell off the board.

Keep posting the pics and if you want a spare pair of hands any time just say. Hoping to complete course this year and squeeze in 17th Ed and possibly a visit from NICEIC

I must confess to having not used earth sleeving on a cuple of occasions, but i have used green/yellow insulation tape instead.

No problem with that as long as the bare cpc is fulled covered..

Or the next person who needs to work on it gets their fingers covered with horrible sticky glue!
