Pipe connectors

Hi All

I wonder if one of you plumbers or people in the know can help.

Posted before and just finishing up a loft conversion, first fix plumbing was done by the builders and jut fitting the bathroom sink. Purchased a trap which fits perfectly. Two issues, 1) the outlet for the trap is 36mm, I have that pipe hanging around. 2) the pipe it's meant to be connecting to is 42mm diameter from the outside / the pipe is to short. Can you even buy a 42/36 reducer? thought it was 40mm and 32mm but that does not fit.

Normal 40mm solvent weld waste pipe (ABS) that is usually used for baths/showers and kitchen waste pipe is 43mm outside diameter - normal basin waste pipe would be 32mm which has a 36mm outside diameter.
Normally a 40mm to 32mm reducer would be used into a 40mm solvent weld straight coupler or elbow/bend to take the reducer.

One of these Into one of these and that then fits onto the 40mm waste pipe using cement

You could also use a compression reducer of course but solvent weld is always recommended

Thanks, I have a 40 to 32mm reduccer and the 40mm bit will not go into the 43mm pipe! It's solvent weld. That makes sense but there is no bath just a shower so my guess is they did not have the correct size for a sink so just used 43mm!

Show us pictures of what you have. The reducer goes into a 40mm coupler and the 40mm pipe goes into the other end of the coupler. All solvent welded.
The smaller pipe goes directly into the couplers 32mm end. Is that what you are doing ?

Sorry, second image is not that clear, but have the P type waste which fits perfectly onto the sink. the grey pipe is 36mm which fits onto the waste as pictured. 2nd pic shows the 43mm pipe and the 40mm to 32mm connector (I know the 32mm bit is wrong). But the 40mm will not got into the 43mm pipe. Hope that makes sense.

So I assume you need a 43 to 36mm connector but struggling to find one.

Your reducer appears to be a push fit type ,although your picture isn't clear.
You need a solvent weld reducer and coupler ,as madrab advised earlier.

The trouble with waste pipe is there are 2 types - Polypropylene (PP) push fit and ABS solvent weld.

The PP waste pipe has an outside diameter (OD) of 40mm or 32mm, the 40mm ABS has an OD of 43mm or the 32mm has on OD of 36mm , they are not interchangeable, it's easy to be caught out if you're not familiar with it, so as suggested, if you have bought a pushfit fitting it will not fit.
If the waste pipe is 43mm then you have to buy ABS solvent weld (SW) fittings that need to be glued.

Also if you're buying from the sheds then avoid buying the SW fittings from Toolstation (Aquaflow) as they seem to be slightly different in size from all the other manufacturers, buy the fittings from Screwfix (Floplast), they should be ok.

As mentioned before though too, the McAlpine compression fitting can also be used, they are mostly universal and can be used with both types.

Wouldn't work though if the outflow pipe is 40mm, the trap outlet will still be 32mm for a basin?

Yes but we always call it either 32mm or 40mm regardless of type - (or 11/2" or 11/4" - just to confuse things even more)

Thats what I thought, whilst I'm not a plumber, I'm a very heavy diy-er, and this has really stumped me. The builders were from Ukraine. They did a really good job but maybe that's the standard out there.
