Hi there,

I have to have the bathroom ceiling replaced. It will be an insurance job. Currently, the ceiling is actually made from plastic. I have also been informed that the metal framework/studwork underneath is poorly done.

My question is: Are there any advantages to a plastic ceiling? Should I try to source a replacement plastic ceiling or should I just replace it with plasterboard and skim it?

Does plastic cope better than plasterboard/skim in the damp environment of the bathroom?

Have a look for MARBREX on the web.....used it to good effect in my last house shower room ;)

There is nothing wrong with a plasterboard ceiling in a bathroom providing it’s properly skimmed & painted with decent bathroom paint. Problems arise with condensation due to the lack of decent ventilation; many bathroom windows are never opened which is why BR’s now require forced extraction (fan) in new bathrooms.

Don’t know what type of plastic ceiling you have but unless it was disclosed at the time of insurance proposal your insurance company may only pay for replacement it’s with a conventional ceiling; worth checking ;) .
