Hi

I'm fitting an elbow onto an existing 110mm grey pipe in an accessible but slightly awkward place behind the lav. I'm having a problem actually getting the seal in the female elbow joint over the rim of the existing pipe to get a start (I've chamfered the outside edge).

The chap in the merchants advised me not to use a soap based product to lubricate as it might leak later just use water. This cuts out the most obvious lubricant (for me anyway) and water isn't helping at all.

Is it true I shouldn't use soap and if not what do plumbers use.

I know this sounds daft but I dont want to just take a chance so I will be grateful for an answer
