I doubt that anyone, when asked "How many legs do people have?" would reply "Fewer than spiders".

A lot of people do use these silly names. But it is a matter of fact that 50% of the UK population is of below average intelligence.

That depends on what you mean by "average".

Undoubtedly true, but I'm equally sure that the number of legs you have is not greater than the median or mode of the number of legs in the human population - and those are the sort of 'averages' that J Public tends to think in terms of [even if (s)he doesn't realise it!].

No it wouldn't. Half of the population (rounded up, if the the population was an odd number) would have to have less than 2 legs before the median would change from 2.
