I sometimes read stuff which refers to a plugtop. I've had a search around and cannot find out what exactly a plugtop is, is it just a regular plug?

It is.

Totally illogical and pointless,
but you may have started another lengthy discussion as to the origin.

Although there will be people on here who pull the phrase apart, "plugtop" is a common term in some parts of the country which refers to a "plug".
Most on-line descriptions refer to them as plugs.

Many years ago when I was a young apprentice I made the mistake of walking into my electrical wholesalers and asked for a "plug".

The guy behind the counter laughed at me along with everybody else waiting to be served.

It was highly embarrassing

How about plug. then people stuck a power supply on top of the plug and this became known as a "plug top" power supply.

Then lazy English mutated "plug top power supply" into "plugtop" which then became the name for anything that plugged into a socket.

As a matter of historical fact, I'm sure some people were calling them plugtops long before the wall-wart concept became common.

Seems like this is the most logical explanation:

In WW2, before ring circuits, my grandmother referred to the two sockets in the house as "electric plugs".

These comprised a surface mounted switch with two holes on top. The plug top plugged into the top of the electric plug.

You obviously agree that it is inappropriate to use all those words, so why do so to make your point?

That was completely unneccesary.

Au contraire, Mr person who seeks out every opportunity to criticise me because of his personal and childish vendetta, no matter what I write.

As I did not use them about anybody in particular, the only rational objection you could possibly have is that of the mere appearance of those words.

So please go away, and don't return here until you have succeeded in a campaign, which will require every waking moment you have, to get those words removed from all dictionaries.

Hard as it may be for a person of such limited intelligence as you to grasp, you will find that those words are currently in print. The point I was trying to make was that this:

is utter nonsense - the fact that a term is in common use does not mean that it is correct.

But fear not - it appears that a Moderator who is as thick as you agreed with your pathetic and ignorant complaint.
