Re plastering over Artex I’ve seen this done a few times without any problems but I suppose it will depend on the paint covering! Knock all the rough edges or pips off the Artex with a trowel (depending on the pattern) give it a sealing coat of PVA & let it dry. Apply a 3:1 coat of PVA & skim coat straight onto this.

And im now thinking ah cr4p! I've used smoothover to get rid of the stippled texture ceiling in my lounge. No mention on the tin of PVA etc just basically says to slap it on if the surface is sound, so I did!

Am I likely to end up with a room full of bits of ceiling in the near future?

The PVA is mainly there to solve suction problems. That means preventing the artex sucking all the moisture out of the plaster causing cracks.

So long as it solid and isnt full of cracks your ok :) But if your ceiling looks like a crusty dried up river bed then Oh S**T

Dont worry will be fine
