Porch help!

I want to build a porch, but am wondering if a single skin of bricks would be enough. I also would like advise on building the walls directly onto the solid concrete step. Is that possible?

Any advice would be greatfully received!

you can build it as you see fit as it's only a porch and is not subject to building regulations. (provided it ain't huge!)

single skin is ok so long as your not bothered about a bit of internal damp that may appear after driving rain. same with the step really.

if you were to build on top of a concrete slab then it would need to be able to take the weight of the building. say 250mm thick with at least a 150mm projection beyond the outer masonry line.

porches built to full spec can be comfortable enough spaces to store coats, shoes, the odd mirror etc, but for their size are quite costly.

If you coat the exterior of the bricks with some Thompsons or similar, then you have no problems with moisture getting to the inside.

I would be concerned about building the porch off an existing slab. Most of the time these will sink or tip and take the porch with it. Its not so much the thickness, but most likely will have soft soil underneath it

Put some proper [shallow] footings in to be sure
