I'm in one of my "why is/was it done this way" moods, and bear in mind I'm not a professional.

In my house is 3 tanks in the loft (heating, all hot water, and cold for shower), boiler in front bedroom and cylinder/pump/valve/controls in back bedroom, on a Y plan.

But why didnt they just put the whole lot in the loft? The loft has a gable end wall for the balanced flue of the old boiler, and has a high enough pitch so that the cylinder could fit under the tanks.

I know the tanks have to be above everything else, but do they need to be a certain distance above the boiler and cylinder? It seems a vast waste of space in a 2 up 2 down to have ever thought about filling so much space in the bedrooms with 2 airing cupboards, and disturbing people's sleep in both rooms too.

Sevicing and checking a boiler in the loft is not usually very easy. The higher the distance the between water tanks and hot water cylinder the more pressure you get. You need 10 meters of head to get just 1bar pressure.
