Stones single no.3 was 'Not Fade Away', and this is where they hit the big time! Blending a Buddy Holly song with a Bo Diddley beat, they got too big for the Crawdaddy club and became a household name very quickly. British R&B was on the map and the Stones were about to take it back to America. The rest is geography.

London R&B continued....when the Stones ended their residency at the Crawdaddy club, they were succeeded by the Yardbirds, who, with their young guitarist Eric Clapton were set to become the next Stones-like sensation. This was the Yardbirds first single...

Not just featuring Tina Turner.

The Yardbirds were a short-lived and turbulent group and much of what they did was innovative and original. Eric Clapton left and was replaced by Jeff Beck. I think Beck did his best work with the Yardbirds, and also that the Yardbirds did their best work with Beck. 'Mister You're A Better Man Than I' was a b-side.

Beck eventually left the Yardbirds to form his own group, and he was replaced by lanky guitar sensation Jimmy Page. For a short period, Beck and Page were in the Yardbirds together, and this version of the group made one single: 'Happenings Ten Years Time Ago'. The b-side was an absolute BANGER called 'Psycho Daisies'...

By the time Page joined the Yardbirds their hit parade days were over, but they still had a few tricks in their bag. 'Puzzles', another b-side, has a blistering guitar solo at the end, which the producer, probably Mickie Most, saw fit to fade out part way through. This kind of restriction on the group's 'artistic freedom' caused much displeasure...

The Yardbirds themselves faded out, frustrated and bickering, drinking snd drugging, the usual story. A couple of the members started a new group, Renaissance, which went on to have some success in the 1970s. Page created a new outfit which he initially called the New Yardbirds, before changing its name to Led Zeppelin. That did quite well too.

Eeh, the groups back then were dressed in smart suits even though my Dad called the Beatles "those long haired nits" LOl. Dave Clark Five, Gerry and the Pacemakers.
I think much changed with Glam. Marc Bolam, Bowie etc etc, I loved the 70s, left school in 71 so the 70s were my formative years. American Pie and all of the greats, the 60s were pretty good too. Cilla Black had a big nose.
