The Motorhead story continues with 'Iron Fist', a decent single but a poor LP. The group's success had gone to their heads, and instead of working on a good follow-up to 'Please Don't Touch' they were out GALLIVANTING every night. Fast Eddie tried to keep them in line, but eventually he walked out. The classic line-up was no more, the run of chart success ended. Motorhead had shot itself in the foot.

Rolling Stones 'Time Is On My Side', 1982. This is from a huge concert in Leeds that was added on to the end of their European tour. It was said at the time that this would be the very last Rolling Stones concert - and indeed it was - for about 6 years. The 80s was a lean time for a Stones fan...

Motorhead 'I Got Mine', 1983. Ex-Thin Lizzy guitarist Brian Robertson replaced Fast Eddie but he didn't last long - the fans didn't like him and neither did Lemmy. This was a shame, because the one LP made by this line-up ('Another Perfect Day') was great; their best since 'Overkill'. I wish they'd recorded more, Robertson had a chiming guitar sound and his playing in Motorhead is often described as 'melodic', as if the group had never been melodic before!

 
Motorhead 'Killed By Death' 1984. Lemmy convened a new Motorhead in 1984, with the two young guitarists Wurzel and Phil Campbell, and drummer Pete Gill ex-Saxon. The group was back with a bang...

 
Allman Brothers 'Jessica'. Long and glorious instrumental featuring Dickie Betts on guitar and Chuck Leavell on piano. Leavell now plays with the Stones. Well-known as the theme tune to 'Top Gear'. It always reminds me of Anne Nightingale's radio shows...

Motorhead 'Going to Brazil'. By the 1990s Lemmy had moved to America, where he would spend the rest of his life mixing with the new generation of tuneless U.S. heavy metal acts who treated him like a god, and returning to Britain only for a tour now and then. Philthy Phil came back for this one, but didn't stay for long...
