Fault light on Potterton Performa 28e Boiler came on last night, indicating fault with fan/flue.

Turned boiler off, left for 5 minutes then put back on and same light came on.

However, have turned boiler on this morning as a final check and its working again, the fan/flue fault light isn't on and we're getting heat from all our radiators.

We had this problem about 6 weeks ago, the same light came on and we got a gas registered plumber out who seemed to have fixed the problem. Whilst we weren't in the property at the time (parents let the chap in as we were both at work), the plumber said that one of the knobs on the bottom of the boiler had been knocked off slightly and it was simply a case of turning the knob back.

However, given this has happened again, and seems to have magically (and probably temporarily!) fixed itself, what should we do next?

Boiler is due a service so that's probably the next step - would a service pick this up and fix the fault?

Some pictures of "the knobs underneath" the boiler below.

The position of those knobs is irrelevant to the fan/flue fault. A service won't always pick that up as the boiler may well work ok during the service. Advise your service man of the problem and he should be able to permanently fix your fault. I do hope you don't have the first guy service it as he sounds like a ?osser.

Did the guy who soldered those pipes have a white stick? Sheesh.

Your boiler needs a repair and not just a service!

Make sure that you explain that clearly to whoever you call.

But I have to say that I don't think that the "knob" guy properly checked the boiler when he came. Many would call him back and expect him to do a better job at diagnosing the fault.

Even though its intermittent then most RGIs would still be able to identify the likely cause even if not presenting on the visit.

But you do need someone who specialises or is very competent at repairing boilers. Merely installing new boilers done not need that skill.

Thank you for all the replies - confirms our suspicions that the first guy was basically a cowboy.

There are 3 areas I would be investigating none of then are under the boiler!

Which areas should the Gas Safe engineer be looking at?

I would not class him as a cowboy, just not so skilled at fault finding. The gas safe qualifications are only to ensure that an engineer is safe and not to indicate any level of fault diagnosis capability.

We are not permitted to give DIY advice on gas/combustion issues here in case it helps/encourages people to try something which is potentially dangerous.
