we are having lots of problems with the boiler, it never comes on when it supposed to and the red light is flashing we press the reset button and have to keep banging it for the heating to then kick in, then it sometimes works and sometimes trips out again, the boiler is 6 yrs old and has not had any parts replaced the problem is getting worse, does anyone have any ideas

so many times i have found it hasnt then get the symtoms you discribe ;)
to check you can open door to right hand side unscrew the philips screw and pull the door towards you
you shoul have a wire going to your pump conections(it will be marked PUMP)

p.s. turn electric off to boiler first

If banging it makes it work I would primarily suspect the fan, aps or gas valve sticking.

You need a corgi in to check it over, and not just one who has diagnosed the pcb faulty before he even turns up
